PACIFIC PALISADES RESIDENCE

This 7,500 square foot house was created in the Pacific Palisades Riviera neighborhood with views of the Pacific Ocean. The project began as a major renovation of an existing Spanish Mediterranean style home. As options were explored, it became irrational to renovate to the level of acceptable design that the clients aspired for. The decision was made to demolish the existing home and start over with a blank slate.

The concept that drove the form and layout of the house was to have strong connections to the yard and views in an extroverted way on both floors, and at the same time have an introverted arrangement to interior spaces and rooms.

This resulted in a sky-lit central gallery space that is vertically proportioned and long like a cathedral that all rooms extend from, which riffs on being the public space. Counter to that are the main living spaces and master suite, which are horizontally proportioned and have their exterior doors and windows that laterally connect to the outside and the views.  A unique program element includes three two-car garages for the clients’ car collection.

As a family home, it was designed for kids, adults, daily life, and occasional entertainment. It was also designed to feel like a resort since its in LA, overlooks the Pacific, has a large yard, and has nice ocean breezes – all of which add up to a casual vibe of relaxation. The exterior is white plaster with black windows and doors.  There is a covered terrace on the first floor for the living spaces and a large open deck on the second floor for the master suite. The interior was designed with Alison Palevsky who was also the client.
