SIYATHEMBA FIELD HOUSE
This design proposal provides a gathering place for the Somkhele youth and a home for the areas first-ever girls football league. The proposal also provides space for a community medical clinic, AIDS education, water collection, cultural and community gatherings, and economic development. It is designed to be built with local materials and labor.
The pitch and field house are connected directly to the village by an existing pedestrian path. A round tower that contains a cistern for water collected by the building roofs marks the entry to the field house. It is located west and slightly uphill of the pitch to utilize the collected water for irrigation of the pitch, provide a good spectator outlook, and to maximize views to the valley to the east.
To enhance the facility as a focal point in the community it has been designed to provide unique training opportunities. The pitch allows for two side-by-side youth fields, or one adult size field. The team benches and spectator area are protected from inclement weather. The changing rooms include secured equipment storage, showers, and drinking fountains. The facility also includes a raised platform to videotape training films and two screened “ball wall” courts for touch training.
