Dr. Paul Turek came to CCS Architecture with the vision for a "very non-medical, medical space" for his men's health care practice. “Most men are intimidated by doctors' offices and try to avoid them, so this space needed to be inviting, comfortable and convenient,” said Turek.
Cass Calder Smith and his team, who also designed Turek's home, responded by creating a classic, mid-century modern, living-room-style space for The Turek Clinic.
Smith’s team divided the space into public/administrative and clinical sections, with the goal of creating a relaxing, practical space that is very inviting for care. The interior was transformed through the addition of strategically placed glazing, new paint colors, vintage modern furnishings and art.
New glazing at the reception area, a.k.a. the "living" room, brings in more light and makes the room feel larger. The walk to the conference room is animated with the help of new floor-to-ceiling windows, which admit natural light and extend the view.
Also in this zone, a new palette of gray and dark coffee replaces the former whitewalls and beige carpeting. Mid-century modern furnishings include George Nelson Executive Office Group desks, walnut and stainless steel Parsons tables, and various Eames chairs. Custom artwork features photographic blurs of Turek in surgery and of the doctor's own Maserati.
The clinical section of the office, which contains patient consult and procedure rooms, is an all-white space, reminiscent of the bright white rooms and hallways from hospitals of the 40’s and 50’s. Even the flooring is white linoleum to cement the effect.
