ART VILLAGE RESIDENCE

Southampton's historic Art Village, the enclave of cottages surrounding William Merritt Chase's famed 19th century painting school, is the setting for a notable new residence. Drawing inspiration from the Arts and Crafts vernacular of the neighborhood, the collaboration of Jeff Gardner Construction and CCS Architecture has created a home with a very 21st century twist. The cedar shingle exterior and generous porch bespeak a  traditional home, but the interiors surprise and delight with an open floor  plan, floor to ceiling doors and a light, airy indoor-outdoor character.

The first floor offers an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area, augmented by a bedroom and a full bath. Upstairs, in addition to the two guest bedrooms and full bath, is a large master suite with high ceilings, a truly voluminous  walk-in closet and a marble-trimmed bath with double sinks and ample storage. Together, the first and second floor are 2,545 square feet while the lower  level affords room to grow, with another 1,255 square feet of finished living  area. The two large open carpeted rooms have radiant floor heat and French  doors onto a stairway which leads to the backyard with its heated gunite pool and plenty of terracing for summer fun. True to its modern credentials, this home is very light touch on the environment; the certified EnergyStar rating  results from the house's SIP construction, geothermal heating and  air-conditioning and LED lighting.
