PT. REYES RESIDENCE

Surrounded by a seashore environment and several historic dairy farms, this 2500 square foot residence was built in West Marin, California in 1997. Individual buildings are grouped to create multiple outdoor spaces, similar to the arrangement of nearby farms. Two primary buildings define a three-sided courtyard overlooking the panoramic Point Reyes Valley.

The first floor of the main building encompasses living, kitchen, and dining areas, which are laid out to focus on the bold views and outdoor connections.  The rooms have a distinct spatial character, based on use, and are deliberately open to the other areas.

The kitchen and dining room are on the same level, while the living room is down three steps with full-height glass openings on three sides to create a virtual place in the landscape.  The second floor houses the master bedroom, closet and bathroom.

A secondary building is linked by a sheltered walkway that overlaps the entry.  From here, one can enter the courtyard, the main building, or retreat to one of the guest bedrooms.  Behind the gate is a stand-alone carport completing the three building composition.
