STINSON BUNGALOW

This beach house is back: subtractions, additions, refinements.  

Built in the 1960s, it was a family weekender and never renovated. It slowly aged in the marine environment and many of its characteristics became obsolete. Now with new owners, it’s redesigned for today; restored, modern, casual, and more iconic.

Beyond the new façade, the house’s key rooms are oriented towards the placid lagoon and simultaneously inward towards its intimate and sheltered courtyard. It’s a very transparent building from various directions due to the expanses of glass and views of water and mountains. This also maximizes the indoor-outdoor effect and the strong connection to the Stinson setting.  Most of the house was demolished and expanded with the concept that it was a ‘restoration’ of a mid-century, Bay Area ‘beach house’. Rooms were expanded and altered, roofs lifted, windows and glass doors enlarged. Every interior and exterior element was replaced – from the siding to the floors, to the fireplace, and the flora. The courtyard and decks were also replaced with the additions of a fire pit and waterside jacuzzi. Fine craftsmanship from the carpentry to the metal work to the furnishings were a high priority. The axial breezeway entry from the street establishes a transition from the busy world to a getaway.

Cass Calder Smith with Björn Steudte designed and directed the architecture and collaborated with NicoleHollis on the interiors and Honey Kearns on the landscape. The overall design, the materials and the finishes, plus the landscape are intentionally casual and naturalistic, which is the character of Stinson Beach. The finishes and furniture by Nicole Hollis are a contemporary mix of vintage, modern, and custom that was carefully selected with the owners to accommodate their vision for a beach house and to be in sync with the mid-century design of the house. The owners live full-time in Mill Valley with their four young boys, have a vacation house in Sun Valley, and are avid art collectors, which was integrated into the interior during the design process.

The sense of place in StinsonBeach and more specifically Seadrift, which is within West Marin, is one of outdoor recreation and socializing for all ages; swimming and sailing in the lagoon, surfing and fishing in the ocean, bicycling and hiking through the hills, and fueled with locavore dining and drinking.
